🌌 What Is the Solar System?

Our solar system is a fascinating collection of celestial objects connected by gravity. At its centre is the Sun, a star that provides light and energy to our planet.

Eight planets orbit the Sun:

  1. ☿ Mercury: The closest planet to the Sun.
  2. ♀ Venus: The hottest planet in our solar system.
  3. 🌍 Earth: Our home and the only planet known to support life.
  4. ♂ Mars: The Red Planet.
  5. ♃ Jupiter: The largest planet.
  6. ♄ Saturn: Famous for its beautiful rings.
  7. ♅ Uranus: An ice giant that rotates almost on its side.
  8. ♆ Neptune: The farthest planet from the Sun.

Our solar system also includes dwarf planets, moons, asteroids and comets. Each object has its own fascinating characteristics, making space an incredible subject for young explorers.

🌍 Two Important Movements of Earth

To understand the seasons, children first need to understand two important movements of our planet: rotation and revolution.

1. Earth's Rotation: Why Do We Have Day and Night?

Earth spins around an imaginary line called its axis. This spinning movement is called rotation.

One complete rotation takes approximately 24 hours. As Earth rotates, different regions face the Sun.

  • ☀️ The side facing the Sun experiences daytime.
  • 🌙 The side facing away from the Sun experiences nighttime.
  • 🔄 Earth's continuous rotation creates the daily cycle of day and night.

Think about it: When you wake up in the morning, children on the other side of the world may already be getting ready for bed!

2. Earth's Revolution: Why Do We Have a Year?

While Earth rotates on its axis, it also travels around the Sun. This movement is called revolution.

Earth takes approximately 365.25 days to complete one orbit around the Sun.

That journey defines our year. The extra fraction of a day is one reason we add a leap day to our calendar approximately every four years, with some calendar exceptions.

🧠 Remember:
Rotation = Earth spins on its axis = Day and night.
Revolution = Earth travels around the Sun = One year.

🍂 Why Does Earth Have Different Seasons?

Here comes one of astronomy's most interesting discoveries!

Many children assume summer happens because Earth moves closer to the Sun and winter happens because Earth moves farther away.

But that is not the main reason!

Earth experiences seasons because its axis is tilted by approximately 23.4 degrees relative to the perpendicular to its orbital plane.

As Earth travels around the Sun, this tilt changes the angle and duration of sunlight received by different parts of the planet.

  • 🌞 Summer: A hemisphere tilted toward the Sun receives more direct sunlight and generally experiences longer days.
  • ❄️ Winter: A hemisphere tilted away from the Sun receives less direct sunlight and generally experiences shorter days.
  • 🌸 Spring: Daylight gradually increases and temperatures generally begin warming in many regions.
  • 🍁 Autumn: Daylight gradually decreases and temperatures generally begin cooling in many regions.

The Northern and Southern Hemispheres experience opposite seasons. When it is summer in much of North America, Australia experiences winter.

Interesting fact: Earth is actually closest to the Sun in early January, during winter in the Northern Hemisphere!

📅 Solstices and Equinoxes Explained

Two important astronomical events help us understand Earth's seasonal cycle.

☀️ What Is a Solstice?

A solstice occurs twice each year, around June and December. These events mark the longest and shortest daylight periods of the year in each hemisphere.

🌗 What Is an Equinox?

An equinox occurs around March and September, when the Sun is directly above Earth's equator. Day and night are approximately equal in length across much of the planet.

These events are useful for teaching children how Earth's tilt and orbital position influence daylight throughout the year.

🪐 Learn Through Play with PlayPuzzle's Science Lab

Science education becomes more meaningful when children are encouraged to observe, question, predict and explain.

The Solar System & Seasons learning experience is part of PlayPuzzle's Science Learning Platform, which brings science topics into an engaging digital learning environment.

Use the Solar System & Seasons Lab alongside these learning challenges:

  • 🔭 Identify the Sun, Earth and other planets.
  • 🌍 Explain the difference between rotation and revolution.
  • ☀️ Investigate why daylight changes throughout the year.
  • ❄️ Predict which hemisphere experiences winter.
  • 🧠 Explain why Earth's distance from the Sun is not the main cause of seasons.

Rather than treating astronomy as a collection of difficult terms, encourage children to connect what they learn with everyday observations.

🚀 Your Mission: Become a Junior Space Scientist!

Visit the lab, explore the topic and try answering these questions:

  1. Why does the Sun appear to rise and set?
  2. What would happen if Earth did not rotate?
  3. Why do Australia and India experience different seasonal patterns?
  4. What role does Earth's tilted axis play?

Challenge: Explain the seasons to a friend using just three sentences!

👩‍🏫 Fun Solar System Activities for Parents and Teachers

Activity 1: Flashlight and Globe Experiment

Materials: A flashlight and a globe or ball with a marked axis.

Use the flashlight to represent the Sun and the globe to represent Earth. Keep the globe's axis tilted in the same direction as you move it around the flashlight.

Ask children to observe how the angle of light changes in different positions.

Learning outcome: Understand Earth's axial tilt and seasonal sunlight.

Activity 2: Create a Solar System Model

Use coloured paper, clay or recycled materials to create the eight planets. Arrange them in their correct order from the Sun.

Learning outcome: Recognize planets and their positions in the solar system.

Activity 3: Become a Weather Detective

Record the weather, temperature and approximate daylight duration in your city over several weeks.

Discuss how weather differs from seasons and why seasonal changes vary by location.

Learning outcome: Develop observation, comparison and scientific reasoning skills.

🇮🇳 How Are Seasons Different in India?

Children in India may learn about summer, winter, spring and autumn, but many regions also experience a prominent monsoon season.

India's seasonal weather is influenced by Earth's solar heating, atmospheric circulation, geography and monsoon winds.

This makes India a fascinating example for discussing the difference between astronomical seasons and regional weather patterns.
